The types of network topology

bus topology: every computer and a network device is connected to the single cable.

ring topology : every computer in a network connected to each other in the form of ring.

star topology : all computer are connected to central device called as hub or switch or a router with the help of a cable .

mesh topology: all the computer devices are connected to each other within a network .It is a point to point connection

Tree topology: There is a root node and remaining nodes are connected in hierarchy.

hybrid topology: It is a combination of two or more above mentioned topologies

Suppose a network administrator is setting up a new network for many workstations using a star topology then the central connecting point may be the hub or switch or a router based on the number of workstations and the size of the network

Explanation:

When using star network topology the devices on the network are connected to a central connecting point called as hub .Each device is indirectly connected to each other through the central connecting point.
These star topologies are most commonly used for home networks with the central connecting point as router, switch or network hub these usage is based on the size of the network.
With the help of Ethernet cables ,coaxial cable or the optical fiber , these network devices are connected to the to central connection point in a star topology.The connection may also be wireless.
Based on the size of the network we choose the central connecting point as hub ,switch or a router.
A hub is network device that contains multiple ports used to connect LAN segments . frames are broadcasted and it shares only the bandwidth with each port .
A network hub can be used as central connection point for devices with a LAN connection. But there is limit for the amount of bandwidth the users can share using hub based network.
If there are more devices added to the network, it takes more time for data to reach its destination in that situation a switch is used as central connecting point . we can have multiple switches that connect to different groups of computer system and these switches are in turn connected to the router which in turn allow devices to connect to internet.
Switches share MAC address and Routers share the IP address and hubs share only the bandwidth .Switched broadcast frames and work in data link layer and routers broadcast packets and work in network layer and hubs operate in physical layer.
Hubs basically used to connect personal computers together, switches allow connecting to multiple devices in a network and router help to transmit packets across network
If a single workstation goes down in a star network topology , the other workstations are unaffected. But the failure of central hub will affect the entire system.
In star topology fast performance is assured with only few nodes , network traffic is low and in the complex environment hub acts as a repeater device for data flow .
Setting the network modifying the network and troubleshooting the problems in the star topology network are straightforward affairs.
Hubs can be easily upgraded.
